5 useful tips and tricks you need to know for summer hair care

As we all know, our body needs water to function. Without adequate hydration, it can not function properly. In the same way, hydration is necessary for supporting our hair health.
When our hair lacks hydration, it gets dull, dry, brittle and prone to breakage.

By prioritizing hydration, you can help restore and maintain hair’s natural moisture balance, resulting in softer, soother, manageable hair and less prone to breakage. Hydration ensures maintaining the hair elasticity and nourishes the hair follicles for better hair growth activity.

These methods will help hair remain externally hydrated. So, this summer, do not forget to hydrate yourself internally and externally.

Be aware of prolonged sun exposure

Summer comes with hot, humid weather and prolonged sun exposure during this time is not a good idea. Prolonged sun exposure hurts our hair.
The ultraviolet rays from the sun penetrate the hair shaft and damage the hair structure, leading to dry, dull, brittle and lifeless hair. Consequently, hair becomes more prone to breakage.

Here are some protective measures you need to take to protect your hair from UV rays.

  • Avoid the peak hours. Between 10 am and 4 pm, the sun is at its peak, and this is the time when UV rays are higher. So, avoid prolonged sun exposure during this time.
  • Always cover your head with a hat, cap, or scarf while outside during the peak hours to protect your scalp. You can also carry a UV-proof umbrella to protect your hair and skin.
  • Do not heat style your hair if you are supposed to be in contact with sunlight because this will have more damage effects on the hair.

Shampoo is the key, but don’t overdo it

A healthy scalp is crucial for optimal hair growth, and during this hot and humid summer, our hair tends to get more oily due to sweat, dust, and dirt. Therefore, to keep our scalp clean, it requires shampoo.

Here are a few tips to prevent dryness after shampooing

  • Choose shampoo according to your hair type and concern.
  • Always shampoo your hair, followed by conditioner or hair mask. I prefer using a hair mask rather than a conditioner because resulting in dandruff, itchiness and hair fall). If you have an oily hair type like mine, using conditioners in summer can make hair even oilier. If you do not even want to use a hair mask, you can use herbal hair rinses, which are easy to make and super convenient.
  • If you have a habit of shampooing your hair daily or doing a lot of physical activity, then use a shampoo that complements your scalp’s pH(probably 5.5)
  • The ideal frequency of shampooing hair with little to no physical activity is 2-3 times a week.

Customize hair care:

Whatever works for me or someone else may or may not work for you because we all are different with unique skin type, hair type, texture, porosity and concern. So, do your research, analyze your hair needs and customize a hair care regime that suits your hair.

Here are a few tips that help you customize your summer hair care.

  • Do not use the same hair care regime throughout the year. Our hair requires hair care as per the season.
  • Your scalp is the foundation of hair. So, to optimize hair growth, focus on scalp health. Use products that will keep your scalp nourished, clean and hydrated.
  • Avoid frequent use of hair styling products like hair sprays, gels, moose, etc. The more you use these products in this hot and humid summer, the more it will make your hair oily, and there’s always a chance of clogged pores due to build-up, leading to hair fall.
